BMW FOUR-DOOR 6 SERIES COUPE FOR 2012

Reliable sources have confirmed that BMW will start selling a 6 Series-based four-door sedan in 2012. The car, which may be called a 6 Series GT, is based on the Concept CS of 2007 (pictured here). That car featured four interior seats and a new design language for the BMW brand. On its crosshairs are other four-seat, four-door tourers like the new Audi A7 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz CLS, and to a lesser extent, Aston Martin’s Rapide and the Porsche Panamera.

A four-door 6 Series would pull its engines off the same assembly line as the normal 6er, as well as 5 and some 7ers. What that translates to are 3.0-litre turbos making about 240kW, 4.4-litre twin turbo V8s with 300kW and possibly an M6 GT kicking out over 400kW. Diesels and a hybrid would of course be accommodated too.

You might wonder why it’s taken BMW so long to bring it to market, and the answer to that question is simple: recession. Word is, all systems were almost go when the fit hit the shan in the auto industry. Such projects as the CS then went aground. Times seem to be improving again. Does it mean an X7, which was also axed just before the recession, is now back in discussions?
