The Mazda CX-5 is Mazda's first car from the so called 6th generation vehicles to be launched across the globe from December 2011. Featuring an all new platform, design language, engines and transmissions (SKYACTIV technologies this car is Mazda's answer for the Compact Crossover SUV segment. It is going to be officially unveiled at the September 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is a smaller version of the Mazda CX-7 which is a small SUV The CX-5 is said to have revolutionary powertrain with record breaking fuel economy due to 14:1 compression ratio's for both the petrol and diesel engines. Mazda is replacing its entire lineup with the SkyActiv Engine. No specs are released yet but sources claim that the CX5 will be able to obtain 30/40 street/highway MPG.
According to Masashi Nakayama, Chief Designer of the concept, "I felt a compact SUV was the perfect vehicle to express agility and focused movement; the flexibility of four limbs moving in unison, and in an upright posture."
According to AutoCar the new 2.2-liter diesel engine will make 173-hp at 4500 rpm and a tremendous 310 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm. Those numbers make it a functional engine option for anything from the next-gen Mazda3 to the larger Mazda6 and several of the brand’s crossovers.
When the CX-5 does launch in the December 2011, it is expected to first be available with Mazda’s new 2.0-liter direct-injection engine that will join the Mazda lineup later this year in the Mazda3.
