Mercedes-Benz announced that its new 2012 C63 AMG Coupe will arrive at U.S. dealers in September. With a big 6.2-liter V-8 engine mounted up front, and drive sent strictly to the rear wheels, we can think of few better cars than the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe to go drifting in except perhaps the even more extreme Black Series version.
The Black Series edition is powered by a version of Mercedes' now legendary, naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V-8, which pumps out a robust 510 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque in this application. The engine's forged pistons, connecting rods, and lightweight crankshaft are straight out of the SLS AMG. Running the show is a new high-performance engine control unit, which makes possible the claimed 4.2-second dash from zero to 60 mph.
The C63 Black Coupe press kit is littered with references to the trickle-down technology from Mercedes' racing efforts and the car's other go-fast goodies, but what will really sell you is the sound. During our brief time with the car, we captured some audio and video clips that just might spoil the sound of any V-8 you hear from now on. The car's throaty engine note is reminiscent of the SLS AMG, and at full wail, its sport exhaust system will likely make this super coupe's presence known a couple blocks away.
The exterior has been dressed up with new front and rear aprons, a new grille, clear-lens headlamps, side sills, a "powerdome" hood and a deck lid spoiler.
The cockpit of the C63 AMG Coupe is equally arresting, with a three-dial AMG gauge cluster, a flattened sport steering wheel with multifunction buttons and paddle shifters, sport seats offered in a choice of leather or a new breathable manmade fabric, and a choice of piano-black lacquer, aluminum, carbon fiber or wood accents and trim.
Also carried over from the sedan is the 7-speed AMG Speed shift automatic transmission. Its controlled-efficiency mode reportedly helps reduce fuel consumption, while a number of performance modes help with speedy shifts.
Visually, the AMG coupe distinguishes itself from the standard model with a number of dress-up items. The brand’s three-pointed star sits prominently on a single crossbar, whereas the base coupe’s insignia nests between two bars. There are 18-inch painted gray wheels, which replace the standard bright metal units, while a vestigial spoiler and black front and rear aprons suggest the automobile’s sporting potential.
