THREE AND FOUR-CYLINDER TURBOS FOR BMW

Turbocharged engines aren’t just a new fad for BMW, they are here to stay. Sure the company built a few in the 1970s but it’s since been known for the naturally aspirated power pack. Until recently. Now it says there’s more to come in this arena, including new 4-cylinder and even 3-cylinder turbos. And they won’t just be petrols, they will be diesels too!

According to sources, the end is nigh for the brand’s famous straight fours in terms of aspiration. Already we see the new 180kW 2.0-litre turbo they’ve put in the X1. It’s the third new turbo from BMW, after the 3.0-litre and the 4.4-litre V8. We are looking at small, 4 and 3-cylinder turbos for both petrol and diesel. That means existing 1.6-litre, possibly 1.5 or even 1.4-litre turbos, thankfully not for cars like the 5 and 7 Series but certainly for 1 and 3 Series, plus the MINI brand.
